1. George Flynn was born about 1850 and died after 1874.
General Notes: Caldwell Co., KY History, Turner Publishing Co., Paducah, KY.
George Flinn served as a guide from the the Cumberland to the "Choctaw Nation." He received payment at the rate of one dollar per day. On February 1784, Flinn gave a receipt in the amount of 15 pounds, six shillings for having served as a guide for John Reid to the Chickasaw Nation. By the next year it appears that his activiities had moved further down the Cumberland for in August, 1785, he entered a claim at the Land Office for 1000 acres of land on Eddy Creek.
An interesting promissory note was executed by Robert Simpson to Robert Mossely that bore a date of Sept. 12, 1792, was attested to by George Flinn and Benjamin Davis. For the advancement of fourteen pounds (English Sterling), Simpson promised to deliver to Robert Mossely or his agent "good Market Buffalow Beef, free of Boone (bone) of value equal to the money advance."This buffalo beef was to be delivered to "Red Banks on the Ohio(present site of Henderson, KY)or any other place that he (sic, Mossely) or his should salt beef on the Banks of said river, any aney time in the ensuing fawl before the fawl hunt is over."
It is believed that Simpson was associated with Flinn as a professional hunter during the 1792 fall hunting season and that their activities were concentrated in the Tradwater River Valley. Knowledge of Flinn's long and very early associations with the Tradewater region was so widely recognized that J. Russell's 1795 Map of the State of Kentucky designated the Tradewater River as "Flinn's Creek." A Tradewater tributary, Flinn's Fork perpetuates the name of this famous Tradewater Valley frontiersman. It is believed that George Flinn also maintained a hunting camp at the sulphur lick that is located on the East Fork of Flinn's Fork and is now known as the Gum Lic. No one knows how long George Flinn lived on and hunted the Tradewater Valley prior to the settlement of Caldwell Co., but it is felt that it was for at least a decade.
George Flinn died in Livingston Co.,KY in 1799 and the inventory of his estate of his estate lists a "great boat." It is believed that the old frontiersman established a ferry during the early 1790's on the Ohio immediately below the mouth of the Tradewater River. He probably operated the ferry at the point intermittently while not hunting. The sons of the old frontiersman operated a ferry at this point after their father's death.
