The most widely accepted origin of the word Palatine and its relation to the geographic area of the middle Rhine Valley in Germany comes from the Romans. This reference comes from Palatine Hill in Rome, when the title was generically applied to describe local officials.

These local officials in Germany who oversaw the land areas assigned to them were referred to as the 'counts palatine'. As the Holy Roman Empire expanded into northern Europe, the word 'palatine' eventually became descriptive of the geographic area, referring to it as the 'Palatine' region.

…This region was an Electorate state of the Holy Roman Empire, encompassing the area now occupied by Alsace, Lorraine, Würtemburg, Baden, Mainz and Treves and ran from Cologne to Mannheim.

…All of Palatine people were Protestants but differed in their specific religious ideology. Many were Lutherans, some Calvinist or Zwingli, some Reformed. All rejected the idolatrous aspects of Roman Catholicism and espoused the freedoms that reflected the Protestant tenets.

Knipp was originally spelled Knöp. Varner were originally from about 30 miles northwest of Frankfort, Germany in the Palatine Region.
The "o" in Knop had an umlaut, but the name was translated Knipp, and the religious affiliation appears to be Lutheran.

Verner (Varner) Knipp was born in 1765 in Germany. He died on 7 May 1839 in Sinking Springs, Green County, Tenn.. He was buried in Sinking Springs, Green Co., TN.

In the late 1700's Varner, William, John Knipp, and (possible brother) George came to U.S. probably as result of religious beliefs. He was already married and had children when he came to the U.S.

His name is reported to have been pronounced as Wer´ ner K´-Nipp, which shows that the name was Anglicised after coming to America. Knipp descendents still live in house built in the 1800's near Greenville, Green County, TN.

Verner (Varner) Knipp was included in the founders of the Lutheran Church Est 1801, which is near his grave. The Lutheran Church record shows Varner buried at Sinking Springs Cemetery, Greenville, Green County, TN.

In addition to the children shown for Verner, there may be another son, Elias Knipp, Born May 12 ,1812, son of Christina Knipp and Varner Knipp was listed in the 23 April 1796 Wythe County, Virginia, tax records as having no slaves, three horses and two males over age 16. (Possibly his brothers).

He was listed in the 1810 Wythe County, Virginia, Census; he married about 1783 to Christeener, born before 1765, location unknown. (Possibly Holland)
Knipp descendents still live in old Knipp homeplace built in the 1800's near Greenville, Green County Tenn. Verner was included in the founders of the Lutheran Church Est 1801, which is near his grave.
