Lester (Leicester, Leister, Lister)

Shibden Hall was built in A. D. 1420. By the late 16^th Century the Lister (Leister, Leicester, Lester) family was well established as tenants, and later as land owners, in Halifax and Hull.

Thomas Leister was born on 15 May 1586. Thomas's grandfather (Samuel Leister, b. 1507 in Yorkshire) was a cloth merchant and tenant at Shibden Hall. Samuel was the great-grandson of Richard, Constable of Halifax)

Thomas Lister, son of Samuel Lister, inherited Shibden. Thomas Lister's brother, James George, was the father of the Thomas Leister who immigrated to the Colony of James City in 1618-1620. The name Leister was changed to Lester.
