Descendants of Moses Riddle

General Notes: The first record which appears to definitely be this William Riddle is the 1767 tax list, Tithables of Pittsylvania County, 1767 of persons residing in the newly formed Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He is listed as "William Ridle" and next to him on the list is "Moses Ridle (Indian)."

As far as can be determined, Moses Ridle was the father of William Riddle and was of Scotch-Irish, Indian and Portuguese (Melungeon) ancestry. "Indian" - Pittsylvania County, VA Tax List - 1767; "malato" - Orange County, NC Tax List - 1755.

The term "mulatto" as it was used in the 1700's in this area of the Southern States referred to persons of skin color darker than European white, and evidence suggests included persons of American Indian, Portuguese, Mediterranean, and Moorish ancestry - anyone who looked "darker" to the individual census or tax list taker. Persons of African black ancestry were generally listed as "negro" on these same tax lists (see Orange County Tax List - 1755). Melungeon people were often labeled "mulatto" or "free persons of color," but also often were called "white."
In the Riddle family of Utah there is a tradition that the family was of "Portugee" ancestry, which is a common tradition among people of Melungeon ancestry.

The spellings "Riddle," "Ridley," "Ridel," "Ridle," and "Riddell" can all be found in various documents in connection with both William Riddle and Moses Riddle. For conciseness I will use the spelling "Riddle," indicating when a document spelled the name otherwise, but it must be recognized that spelling of surnames in the 18th century was very fluid.

Moses married Mary GIBSON, daughter of Thomas GIBSON and Mary. Mary was born about 1720 and died after 1740.

General Notes: He was a Loyalist in the Am. Rev., lived in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and was hung at Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., North Carolina. Col. Benjamin Cleveland captured William Riddle and hung him in the Spring of 1781 at Wilkesboro, NC

This report offers possibilities as to who his parents were, identifies his seven surviving children and their spouses, and traces the decendency of Isaac William Riddle - one of the seven children - who went to Texas. All Isaac's known children and their spouses are identified. Isaac's son John, who joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and went west to Utah in 1850, is documented as well as his wives.

After Wm. Riddle died, his wife and children moved to Hawkins Co., TN along the Clinch River and lived near Hurd farm, which was the Henry Fisher and Happy Riddle Fisher (d/o William and Harriet Riddle) farm.

Micajer Bunch was one of those who migrated from the Flat River in Orange County, North Carolina to the New River. He lived in Fincastle County and later owned land in Wilkes County, North Carolina on Elk Creek. Micajer Bunch may have been one of the members of Tory Capt. William Riddle's gang.

Micajer went into Lee County, Va. near the same time as the orphan children of William Riddle. Micajer Bunch and William Ingram (Ingraham) were signers of the petition to form Lee County, Va. Ingraham was married to Happy Riddle, widow of William Riddle. Micajer Bunch also appears on a Cumberland County, Ky. tax list in 1799. (pp. 78-79)

William married Harriett "Happy" Roberts, daughter of Dozwell ROGERS and Unknown.

6 M iv. Isaac Riddle was born in Apr 1777 in Virginia and died on 29 Dec 1856 in Titus, Texas at age 79.

Isaac married Anna GRIZZEL GRIZZEL (GRISWOLD), daughter of William GRIZZEL (GRISWOLD) and Annie, on 21 May 1801 in Virginia. Anna was born on 17 Jul 1781 in North Carolina and died on 30 Nov 1861 in Titus, Texas at age 80.

7 M v. Thomas Riddle was born in 1782 and died in Aug 1854 in Bradley, Tennessee at age 72.

9 M vii. James Riddle was born in 1785 in Virginia and died in Cumberland, Kentucky.

Third Generation

Happy married Henry Fisher, son of Peter Fisher and Appolonia Heckert LAMM, on 7 Feb 1789 in Russell County, VA. Henry was born on 1 Jan 1759 in Berks County, PA, died on 3 Feb 1839 in Hawkins County, TN at age 80, and was buried on 5 Feb 1839 in Fisher Cemetery at Fisher Valley in TN.
